Outcry Over Polanski Arrest

The other day I heard about Roman Polanski's arrest in Switzerland. I thought, "Fair enough; he is currently wanted in the USA, and Switzerland has an extradition treaty with us."

Apparently, plenty of other people disagree:

Why are they so upset? Polanski admitted to having sex with an underage girl; then he fled the country. I don't want to get too wrapped up in the alleged crime itself, but even if he feels he is innocent, he needs to be sent back the US to be tried fairly. It sounds like he may have gotten shoddy treatment by the justice system last time, but he needs to come back so we can remedy that. The fact that all these other actors, directors, etc. feel that his arrest is an outrage scare me. Their seeming ignorance of the legal system and international relations is the basis for my post.
